Fortezza of Rethymno opening hours

What the hours mean in practice
Last admission is not closing time, and a proper visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours. If you arrive twenty minutes before the last admission in summer, you will be walking a 1,307-metre circuit against the clock and you will miss the western bastions. Arrive by 17:30 at the latest if you want the sunset side of the walls without hurrying.
The two good windows
The first hour after opening is cool, quiet and the easiest light to walk in. The last two hours before closing put the western bastions against the sunset over the Cretan Sea. Between them, in July and August, the hill is hot and shadeless. The seasonal detail is on the best time to visit page.
Winter
Hours contract, and some tours do not run at all from November to March. Confirm both before you travel. If you are booking a guided visit for the winter, book one with free cancellation so a change in the site’s hours does not cost you anything. What each tour includes is set out on the all-tours page.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the Fortezza open?
Generally 08:00 daily in summer. Winter opening is later and shorter, and it changes season to season, so check the board at the gate.
What time does the Fortezza close?
In summer, last admission is around 19:15. I will not give a winter closing time as a fact because it moves; the gate board and the municipality are the authorities on it.
Is the Fortezza open every day?
In summer it generally opens daily. Out of season, hours are reduced, so confirm before you travel, particularly between November and February.
How early should I arrive?
Give yourself 1.5 to 2 hours before closing. See how long you need for the difference between a full loop and a fast one.
